Deprecated Code. What it is and why you don’t want it.

Deprecated code is a problem which you should not normally see in a current and well maintained website. It is a sign of age and neglect. What is it? Here is a wonderful explanation from TechTerms.com.

The short version is this. Programing languages change over time. What currently works is different from what worked some years ago. As the languages change some old code is rendered obsolete and replaced by new code. Or, is not required because of parallel developments of its framework and/or the environment it works with. When this happens, it is deprecated, i.e. rejected and no longer works.

You may be having problems for which you don’t know the cause or maybe your website is running slow. You can utilize browser tools for developers and see the errors if they are there. When you do, it is time to replace and update the code.

Regular maintenance and updating should be a part of your overall website care. Along with malware protection, SSL Certificates, regular backups, and ongoing upgrades. These and new content are often done along with your SEO efforts to keep your website keyword rankings high. This is so your website shows up near the top in search results when someone does a search for it, your products, services, or the topic covered in your website. Proper SEO includes listing what are called keywords or key-phrases in the website’s code and content. Now, with improving spoken language ‘understanding’, folks are doing spoken searches in full sentences and will find what you are offering if the SEO is done well AND regularly.

Space Based Internet from SpaceX

The first stage of this Falcon 9 Rocket has now flown 4 times and returned successfully. The new SpaceX rockets that land have reduced the cost of getting payloads to space by a significant extreme. A comparison made by the owner Elon Musk, often called the real Iron Man, is international travel. If you threw away each plane that flew from the US to Europe the cost of tickets would be extreme just like low orbit space transportation has been. These ships use hydrogen and oxygen for fuel. You know. WATER split to make the two gases. Very cheap fuel. When the fuel is cheap and you don’t throw the ship away the transportation cost to space has been greatly reduced,

EXCITING LAUNCH OF 60 SATELLITES AND THE LANDING OF THE 1st STAGE

FAST INTERNET BUT THE COST IS NOT ALL IN DOLLARS
This launch was to put 60 ‘Starlink’ satellites in orbit which will be providing internet services from space that are expected to out-perform terrestrial internet service providers by a vast margin in both speed and bandwidth. However, there are great concerns from folks like the ‘International Dark-Sky Association‘ who want to protect the night sky so that space exploration from earth based telescopes can continue. This ability is threatened by the number of these and similar satellites expected to be put in orbit in the coming years.

You can see the Starlink satellites in the night sky now. Space.com says, “SpaceX plans to launch at least 12,000 Starlink satellites for its megaconstellation and is eyeing adding another 30,000 satellites in the future. With other companies like Amazon, OneWeb and Telesat planning their own megaconstellations.”

Between the assault on ‘Net Neutrality’ and now the advent of a man-made sky, perhaps we should take a deep breath and consider alternatives. A wise government will be needed to consider the course we are on and to modify it so as to promote better information exchange systems to reach all people without trapping us in a satellite bubble and curtailing scientific advancement and human knowledge for commerce. What do you think?

https Everywhere! What it is and why you should care.

Does your website address start with http or https? Perhaps, you are wondering what the difference is and why you should care? Well, by this time you’ve likely seen warnings from your web browser as you navigate to websites who’s address is missing the ‘s‘ in https. The warnings indicate that they might be insecure and a potential risk to visit. Or, you may even have been blocked by your web browser from entering some websites.

WHAT IS HTTPS AND WHY SHOULD I CARE?
When data is sent between a website and the user viewing it, that data can be intercepted if it is not encrypted. This makes it easy for those with ill intent to steal your information if you visit the site and to steal your visitors information if you own the site!

When the website address starts with http only and not with https it is not encrypted. So, you want it to start with https. But, this alone does not make the connection secure. There must also be an SSL certificate associated with it.

Again, the ‘s’ in https at the start of a web address indicates that the site is secured with an SSL certificate utilizing a pair of ‘keys’ (bits of code), one on a public server and the other on the website server, which have been assigned with the SSL certificate. These public and private key pairs allow the data to be encrypted between the website being visited and the user’s browser and facilitate the encryption and decryption of the data.

SOLUTIONS!
Google’s website for developers highlights the need for SSL security and the Electronic Freedom Foundation has some excellent background and resources. These include some browser plugins to help you browse the internet more safely and some services to help you or your web developer protect your website and the privacy and security of the visitors to it. Of course, we’d be happy to secure your website for you! ? SEE our annual SSL Certificate Service!

What is SEO? GARDENING!

No! SEO is not gardening! SEO is what gets your website found when someone does an internet search for your company or its products or services. But, there are similarities to a garden!

SEARCH ENGINE OPTIMIZATION
SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. So, maybe the first question which needs to be answered is, “What is a search engine?”

SEARCH ENGINE
search engine is a website where you can perform an internet search for, well, ANYTHING! Just about everything mankind knows can be found on the internet, along with every business who is serious about staying in business and finding new customers. The less serious can’t be found even if you know the business name! Why? Because they do not SEO their websites!

SEARCH ENGINES
For examples of search engines, simply perform a search for search engines on a search engine! Use one of the popular search engines like Google or Bing and search using the key word “search” and see what you get. Then do a search using the key phrase “search engines”. What did you find? You probably had no idea there were so many out there.
{side note: As I wrote this I tried it and I just found that Google has a new interface for tablets from another blog, “Search Engine Land”.}

GOOGLE IT
Just as facial tissues are more commonly known as Kleenex, an internet search is often called “google”. If someone tells you to look something up on the internet, they’ll often simply tell you to “Google it”!

HOW TO GET TO THE TOP OF THE LIST
Ok, let’s backup. Now that you know what a search engine is, you will obviously want your company to show up at the top of the list when someone is looking for your products or services. There are two ways to get there.

SEO vs. SEM? NO!
SEO consists of many activities and is often compared to SEM. I know, I’ve not explained what SEO is and now I’ve thrown another acronym at you. SEM stands for Search Engine Marketing and by comparing the two terms I will define each. The ‘vs.’ above is wrong! Your choice should not be to do one or the other as each has a different impact. Your choice is if and when to do each.

SEO IS ORGANIC AND LONGTERM
SEO is said to be an ‘organic process’ where you don’t simply pay to be at the top of a search list. But, instead you construct your website to be rated highly by search engines. Each uses its own criteria in the form of a computer ‘algorithm’ (program) which analyzes your website.

After being submitted to a search engine, a website is first, ‘crawled’ (scanned) using a program called a ‘spider’ for the many features and attributes the algorithm needs to determine its appropriate place on a search results list for each ‘keyword’ or ‘key phrase’ used by consumers and others looking for information as well as the products and services your company sells!

The ‘key words’ and ‘key phrases’ are looked for in ‘meta tags’ on images and in your website content and are just one of the details being looked at. It also looks to see if your website is ‘mobile friendly’ (test your site on Google here), as well as is the content stagnant or does it change, are there links to it and are they high quality links from expert sites or junk links from ‘link farms’ , and very much more!

SEM

Using an SEM approach, you pay for strategically placed ads including at the top of a search list where the first several are spots are paid for. So, you can show up at the very top in the paid ads section or a few down at the top of the organic results. SEM is more targeted and can get a quick response. A strategy of SEO and SEM will get significantly increase your website traffic, your new business, and your bottom line.

SEO IS LIKE GARDENING
I like the analogy of comparing your website to a garden. You need to prepare the ground, plant the seeds, and then regularly water and weed it so it grows to be a large healthy garden. The same kind of ongoing attention is needed to grow your internet presence.

Setting up your website to be found, registering it and regularly submitting it and its site map to dozens of search engines, making your website ‘mobile friendly’, updating its content regularly, linking social sites, and the other ongoing efforts to get your website found will keep it healthy and your internet presence, along with your business, growing.

This organic approach will keep your website ranked highly while the SEM approach will get it there now and anytime you buy an ad there. But, when you don’t buy an ad there, you are nowhere to be found. You don’t have a healthy garden which can be found anytime. Instead, your website can only be found when you pay for ads and can’t be when you don’t. So, SEM has its place when looking for quick results. But, in the longterm, the organic approach of SEO will keep your company at the top of the list!

Fear Is The Mind Killer

Throughout human history people have taken risks in order to excel. To become stonger. To go where no one has gone before and do things that most people would consider too risky or outright NUTS! Fear is the mind killer. It is the spirit killer and it takes our dreams from us. Don’t let fear steal your dreams. Take a chance on yourself and be prepared to fail so that you learn, land safely, and can try again.

Peace is within us. To find it we must overcome our fear or it may become our master. ?
